LULA - As expected, a special election will be held June 16 to fill a vacancy on the Lula City Council.
The council has formally approved that date for the election to fill the unexpired term of councilwoman Vickey Chambers, who was fatally injured in a traffic accident several weeks ago. The council on Feb. 9 discussed holding the election on June 16.
Qualifying will take place May 4-6.
At that earlier meeting, Mayor Milton Turner noted that the city has no choice but to hold a special election.
"By state law, we have to hold a special called election to replace that vacancy," Turner said. "It cannot be anything that is appointed."
