GPD warns of potential storm-related home repair scams

GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Police Department issued a warning Wednesday about potential home repair scams in light of this week's ice storm.

Spokesman Kevin Holbrook said "Unfortunately, there are people that prey on the innocent when they are most vulnerable, after devastating incidents and storms. These individuals will follow the storms in the same manner as a storm chaser, except they have alternative motives."

Holbrook says homeowners should be on the alert for unsolicited calls or home visits from people identifying themselves as contractors wishing to do an estimate for storm damage or cleanup.

"For your safety do not allow anyone into your home. There are plenty of local, reputable contractors that you can contact. Ask your friends or insurance company for referrals to licensed contractors."

Holbrook offered these tips to follow to avoid home repair scams:
