Prosecutors rest case in Atlanta school test cheating trial

ATLANTA (AP) -- Six months after a trial began, prosecutors have rested their case against educators accused of cheating on standardized tests in the Atlanta Public Schools.<br /> <br /> The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/1z7Loh6 ) that the milestone came Wednesday morning. The trial began with jury selection Aug. 11.<br /> <br /> Jurors were dismissed until Wednesday afternoon so attorneys could argue motions seeking to dismiss some charges on the basis that prosecutors didn't prove their case.<br /> <br /> Thirty-five former Atlanta Public Schools educators have been indicted in the cheating conspiracy. A dozen of them are on trial and plea deals have been reached with the others.<br /> <br /> If Judge Jerry Baxter rejects requests to dismiss charges, defense attorneys are expected to begin calling witnesses and the trial could continue several more weeks.
