CLERMONT - The City of Clermont is pushing ahead with plans to convert to a ward system for electing city council members.

The council Tuesday night passed a resolution asking the state Legislature to adopt an amendment to the town charter reflecting the change.

In November, the council agreed on a map outlining the wards and changes in the charter.
Under the current set-up, which has been in place for years, candidates for the town council run citywide but do not have to live in a specific area. However, under the new plan, they will have to live in a specific part of town but will still be elected citywide. The mayor and one other council member, though, will can live anywhere while being voted on citywide.
