Fire destroys Rabun County home

CLAYTON - A two-story home near Clayton was destroyed by fire overnight Sunday.

Rabun County Fire Chief Daniel Johnson said the call to the home at 841 Pool Creek Road, Clayton, was received at 11:48 p.m.

Firefighters from three Rabun County stations, assisted by Long Creek Fire Department from Oconee County, S.C., battled the blaze.

Johnson said the report containing the owner's name was not immediately available from the initial responding station because its last fire tanker had just gotten back in the station from the scene Monday morning.

"There were no injuries," Johnson said, noting some pets perished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Rabun County firefighters also responded to a fire at a large, three-story house on Black Branch Road, Rabun Gap, Friday night.

"It had a full basement with two stories on top of it," Johnson said. "It burnt one bedroom and the roof above the bedroom also."

Johnson said firefighters were able to get a good stop on that fire.

"It started from the outside, from an outside porch," Johnson said.

The fire appears to be accidental, Johnson said.

"They will be able to fix that structure," Johnson said. "It's got a lot of water in it, because putting that fire out it came down through the floors."

The state fire marshal's office is assisting in the investigations.
