Rainfall pushes level of Lanier above 1073

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE - Rainfall this week helped push the level of Lake Lanier above the 1073 mark about 8:00 Saturday morning as better than four inches of rain fell in many places in the two river basins that feed the lake.

The level of the lake has increased 2.62 feet since last Sunday.  Meanwhile, rainfall at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville totaled 4.61 inches between Sunday and midnight Friday.

In addition, Gainesville recorded record or near-record high temperatures Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.   The high on Christmas Eve reached 70, tying the record for the date which was set in 1964  Christmas Day the high was 73, two degrees shy of the record set in 1955.

Just five years ago, Gainesville and other parts of north Georgia recorded the first White Christmas in decades. (Click here http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/?n=snow20101225 for deteails on that.)

The outlook for the coming week is much the same as it was for this week - rain.  However, temperatures are not expected to be as warm as they've been the past few days and the chance of rain will greatly diminish by New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
