ATHENS (AP) — Yante Maten scored a career-high 24 points and had 12 rebounds as Georgia held off Winthrop 74-64 on Tuesday night.
Maten was 10-of-16 from the field and J.J. Frazier had his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (4-3). He also had five assists.
Keon Johnson scored 21 points to lead Winthrop (6-2), which lost for the first time in three games.
The Bulldogs played without leading scorer Kenny Gaines, who was out with an injured knee.
Georgia led 47-30 six minutes into the second half, but Winthrop cut the lead to 57-51, capped by Roderick Perkins' 3-pointer with 7:51 remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs scored 19 of their final 21 points from the free-throw line.
Charles Mann added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Perkins scored 14 points and Jimmy Gavin added 11 points for Winthrop.
Georgia, which led by as many as 15 points in the first half before Winthrop cut it to 33-25 at halftime, scored the first seven points of the second half.
Maten scored on a jumper, Mann hit a 3-pointer and Frazier scored on another jumper for a 40-25 lead with 18:20 remaining in the game.
Maten's turnaround jumper gave the Bulldogs a 45-29 lead with 16:07 remaining in the game and he hit two free throws to extend the lead to 47-30 with 14:18 left.
Georgia used an 11-0 run to build a 15-5 lead that they extended to 21-9 on Maten's short jumper with 8:48 remaining in the first half.

Perkins hit four 3-pointers, half of Winthrop's eight in the game. The Eagles were 8-of-23 from the 3-point line.
Georgia took advantage of 26 fouls called on Winthrop, shooting 29-of-36 from the foul line (80.6 percent).
