Tractor-trailer runs over hood of car at Banks Crossing

BANKS CROSSING - The Georgia State Patrol has released details of a two-vehicle wreck that happened Monday afternoon in front of Ryan's at Banks Crossing.

The crash was dispatched as a tractor-trailer truck that had run over a passenger car with four people inside.

Trooper 1st Class J. Stamey of Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said that's essentially what happened, but it sounded a lot worse than it was.

According to Stamey, the incident happened on Frontage Road at its intersection with Steven B. Tanger Boulevard in front of Ryan's.

The tractor-trailer truck attempted to turn left from Steven B. Tanger Boulevard onto Frontage Road and the rear axles of the trailer ran up onto the hood of a red Dodge Neon that was stopped at a stop sign on Frontage Road, Stamey said. After crossing the hood of the car, the rear of the trailer traveled down the side of the car, blowing out a window.

The driver and three other occupants of the car, which was pointed in the direction of Tanger Outlets, complained of injuries. Two were taken by ambulance for treatment.

The truck driver was not injured, Stamey said. He was cited for failure to maintain lane.

"He just didn't have room to make the turn," Stamey said. "He didn't have the width to make that turn or the curve."

The Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division is conducting an independent Level 1 inspection of the truck involved.

Stamey pointed out there is a sign on the other end of Frontage Road, near Starbucks, stating No Through Traffic.
