GAINESVILLE - As business license renewal notices go out, Hall County officials want to remind business owners that license fees are increasing by approximately 10 percent.
Business License Director Susan Rector while there is always someone who is unhappy with the increased fee, she was surprised that many license holders were understanding.
"We hope there's not going to be any major impact on them (the businesses)," said Rector. "We had not increased the rate for quite some time, and the cost of almost everything has gone up in that time frame - not only the cost of supplies, but the cost that you charge for your services. So we feel like it's kind of going to be a balancing act there and balance itself out."
Rector said among the changes, the fee structure was updated with less categories - decreasing from 18 licensing fee categories to six, based on how many employees the business had.
The fees increase was the first since 2004. Prior to the change in 2004, the fees had been unchanged for another 10 years, Rector said.
The new fees and categories will go into effect for the 2016 licensing year. The deadline to renew business licenses for 2016 is January 1.
