Report: Georgia expected to name Smart next football coach

By AccessWDUN Staff

ATHENS — After days of speculation, it appears that the University of Georgia has settled on current Alabama assistant Kirby Smart to take over the Bulldogs' football program.

According to a published report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Smart, currently the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator, is expected to accept the position -- though an official announcement may not be made until after this Saturday's SEC Championship game in Atlanta, where Alabama will take on Florida.

Smart, a former defensive back for the Bulldogs (1995-98), as well as an assistant coach, will replace the recently fired Mark Richt. Richt was removed as head coach despite compiling a 145-51 record in 15 years with the Bulldogs, including a 9-3 record during the 2015 regular season. Richt will continue to coach the team through its bowl game.
