GAINESVILLE - While the color red is usually the color associated with fire departments, the 16 Hall County fire stations are going "green" in honor of Veterans Day.
"There are numerous personnel within our department who are currently active duty or are veterans of the armed services," Hall County Fire Chief Jeff Hood said. "As a way to recognize and celebrate these heroes, their contributions and their commitments to our country, Hall County Fire Services will participate in Walmart's Greenlight A Vet program."
Greenlight A Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for veterans by changing one visible, outdoor light to green, which is the color of hope, renewal and well-being. According to the campaign's website, "greenlight" is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement. The campaign is meant to spark a national conversation about recognizing those that have served in the armed forces and to "greenlight" them forward as valued members of society.
Hall County Fire Services Operations Chief Rod Wilson said the green lights will remain for the rest of the year.
"These individuals, who are serving or have served in the armed forces, have done so without reserve," Wilson said. "Whether they wear the uniform of a Hall County Fire Services employee or serve elsewhere in our community, we want them to know that their service to this country and the American people is sincerely and whole-heartedly appreciated."
