OAKWOOD — Dawson County built a 17-0 lead and then hung on late to beat Johnson Friday night in a non-region battle at Billy Ellis memorial Stadium in both teams' season finales.
Hunter Mitchell led the way for the Tigers (7-3, 5-1 Region 7-AAA) with 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns. the effort helped Mitchell finish 1,033 yards rushing for the season.
Alan Sanchez booted a 42-yard free kick field goal with 31 seconds left in the first half for a 10-0 Dawson County lead. The Tigers extended the lead to 17-0 late in the third quarter on a 23-yard Mitchell scoring run.
The Knights (2-8, non-region) rallied back in the fourth quarter. Victor Pittman scored on a 1-yard run to trim the lead to 17-7 and Pittman caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sam Cobett to make it 17-14 late in the game.
The Knights got the ball with 17 seconds left for one final chance but Dawson County's Jeremy Whalen picked off a pass to seal the win.
The Tigers' Coey Watson went 9-for-17 for 105 yards to finish the season with 2,006 total yards of offense.
