LAVONIA - The Welcome Center in Lavonia on Interstate 85 South is undergoing extensive renovations, but Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) officials said the center should re-open by the holiday travel period.
Teri Pope with the GDOT said the welcome center was built in for the 1996 Olympics.
"It has been well-used. Just about every major system inside the building is having to be redone from the HVAC to the plumbing, even out to the water main on the Interstate. The plumbing has got to be redone," Pope said. "Painting, the floors, the parking lot, the roof. Just about everything is being touched!"
New bathrooms will be installed as well, including more environmentally conscious fixtures and lights. "It's going to have sensors on the lights and plumbing fixtures," she said.
Pope said the renovations are taking longer than expected, but they plan to open it up for the Thanksgiving travel period.
