Piedmont women close out regular season with shutout win

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Piedmont College women's soccer team completed its 2015 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout win at Greensboro College in USA South play. 

The win puts Piedmont at 17-1-1 overall tying the top wins mark in the program's NCAA Era (since 2003). Piedmont took the lead in the contest in the first half when CASSIDY REICH converted a penalty kick awarded in the 31st minute. 

Already up 1-0, Piedmont added an insurance goal with Reich breaking free scoring after a through ball from Toi Gillett in the 53rd minute. The 2-0 win sealed Piedmont's second straight season with ten wins in conference play as well after PC finished with a 10-1-1 mark in USA South action, the same record the Lady Lions had last year. 

As a result, PC solidifies top four positioning in the league meaning the Lady Lions will host a quarterfinal contest on Saturday afternoon against an opponent yet to be determined. 

Turning Point
--Piedmont converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute with CASSIDY REICH earning the goal to put her team up 1-0 despite pressure from Greensboro.

Standout Performances
--CASSIDY REICH scored both of Piedmont's goals putting her at 19 on the year, tops in the USA South. 
--MICHAELA GARDNER and ASHLYN ATNIP combined for the clean sheet in goal for Piedmont, the 15th time in 19 games PC has not allowed a score.

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont outshot the Pride 19-5 in the contest including a dominant 8-1 mark in the second half. 
--PC also held the edge in corner kicks as well with a 6-0 advantage in the first half alone. 

News & Notes
--Piedmont has now won the last five in the series between the two though none of the victories have been by more than two goals. 
--Two of the last five have been decided in overtime as today's result was the first two-goal decision in the series since Piedmont fell 2-0 in 2005 to the Pride.

Up Next
Piedmont awaits its opponent in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Championship Tournament yet to be decided. The contest will take place on Saturday, October 31 with Piedmont playing host as the Lady Lions are guaranteed a top four seed in the championships.
