BLUE RIDGE — Sophomore quarterback Cameon Shirley scored on a 1-yard run in the second overtime to lift West Hall to a thrilling 40-37 win over Fannin County in a crucial Region 7-AAA game for both teams.
The Spartans (3-5, 1-3 Region 7-AAA) snapped a five-game losing streak and also stayed alive in the playoff race. It was a tough loss for the Rebels (4-4, 2-2) who came into the game as one of five teams with just one region loss and are now tied for fourth with Banks County.
West Hall trailed 27-24 late in the fourth quarter but got a 50-yard field goal from Cesar Villa with just 40 seconds left to sent the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Darius Coleman Blair scored a 15-yard run and Fannin County answered with a touchdown to send to a second overtime. The Rebels got a field goal in the second overtime and then Shirley, who set up the game-winning score with a 14-yard run to the 1, completed the comeback.
"The kids have never quit even during the losing streak," West Hall coach Tony Lotti. "This keeps us alive for another week."
Kwon Williams had a touchdown run and a touchdown pass to Hykeem Bennett for West Hall. Shirley, playing for the injured Jacob Satterfield, who left the game after the second play.
