GAINESVILLE - The tunnel under Browns Bridge Road, connecting Cresswind developments on the two sides of the road, has been finished and plans are in the works to return the road in that area to its old alignment.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) says the realignment is expected to be effective Oct. 29. The stretch of road in questions is just west of Montgomery Drive.
GDOT spokeswoman Teri Pope says, however, thre will be increased worker activity on the road in the days leading up to Oct. 29 and so extra caution will be needed on the part of motorists. Signs have been in place for several days warning motorists of the pending change in the road's alignment.
Work on the tunnel began in June and the two lanes of the road were shifted to the south to accomodate the construction. The tunnel connects the part of the Cresswind development on the north side of Browns Bridge Road with a new section of the subdivision which has been under construction for a couple of years on the south side of the highway.
Cresswind is an "active adult" (55+) community which, once completed, will consist of about 1,000 single-family homes.
