By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor

GAINESVILLE - Separate fires Sunday, one in East Hall, the other in the South Hall area, resulted in damage to two homes.

Chad Black, Deputy Chief of the Hall County Fire Department, said the first call came in around noon to a report of a kitchen fire at 3211 Thousand Oaks Drive.

"Initial units arrived on scene to find light smoke showing, and heavy fire involvement in the kitchen," Black said.  "Crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen, but the structure suffered heavy smoke damage. Initial reports (indicate) an $85,000 value, with approximately $30,000 worth of damage." He added there were no injuries and the cause of the fire was "unattended cooking."

The second fire occurred about 6:45 Sunday night at 5590 Hog Mountain Road.

Black said firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the rear of a mobile home.

"The fire was contained to the kitchen," he said, adding, "there were no injuries, and a dog was rescued and returned to its owners."  Black said the $40,000 dwelling sustained about $5,000 damage.  Investigators continued to search for the cause of the fire.
