Coey Watson is developing into one of the top quarterbacks in the area -- and the rest of Region 7-AAA is finding that out firsthand.
The Dawson County sophomore has passed for 1,055 yards, rushed for 219 and compiled 15 touchdowns so far this season and is surging through region play.
For example look no further than last Friday night, as Watson torched Franklin County's defense for 407 total yards and six touchdowns in a 54-40 shootout win that saw the Tigers gain sole possession of first place in Region 7-AAA over the Lions.
For his performance, Watson has been named the Loco's Grill and Pub Friday Game Night Player of the Week.
Watson's play is emblematic of the entire Dawson County program: young, hungry and only getting better. This week the sophomore faces another big challenge against a team with another stellar quarterback in Fannin County and Brad Davis. It won't be an easy night for either defense, as both can rely on their arms and legs. And while Dawson currently holds the lead in 7-AAA, Fannin County has just one region loss and is still in a position to contend for the 7-AAA crown.
Certainly Dawson County -- which, at 4-2 and 3-0 in 7-AAA, has already doubled its win total from last season -- will feel confident with Watson pulling the trigger.
Recently, Friday Game Night editor Morgan Lee caught up with Watson to talk about his performance on Friday, the advancement of the Tigers program under new coach Sid Maxwell and what it means for Dawson County down the stretch.
