Child airlifted after wreck near Cornelia

CORNELIA - A two-vehicle wreck near Cornelia Sunday night left two children and an adult injured.

The wreck occurred around 10:45 p.m. at the intersection of Business Highway 441 and the ramp to Georgia 365 southbound, and involved a red Ford F-350 pickup truck pulling a trailer and a black Kia Rio car.

Senior Trooper Jason Stephens of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa provided brief details at the crash scene.

"Basically, the car was trying to attempt a left-hand turn from State Route 105 [Business 441] onto 365 southbound, and pulled into the path of the pickup truck," Stephens said. "The truck struck the car in the passenger side."

The female driver was injured, as were two children in the back seat.

"There were two children involved that were passengers in the car in the rear seat," Stephens said.

The younger of those children was in a car seat in the right side of the back seat, where the impact occurred. After being freed, that child was flown from the scene to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The older child was seated behind the driver and was taken by ambulance to Habersham Medical Center. The driver also was taken to Habersham Medical Center by ambulance.

"The damage on the vehicle is extensive," Stephens said.

Stephens said he was unable to comment on the extent of injuries at the scene.

The wreck shut down Business 441 (State Route 105) for an extended time as a medical helicopter landed on the bridge over Highway 365. The ramp to and from Highway 365 also was closed for a time.

All lanes reopened about 1:15 a.m.
