OAKWOOD - Veteran Oakwood City Councilman Ron McFarland has resigned his seat on the council.

City Manager Stan Brown confirmed Tuesday that McFarland's resignation was effective last Thursday. McFarland stepped down because he is moving outside the city.

A special election to fill the vacancy is expected to be held Nov. 3 in conjunction with the regular Oakwood city election.

Brown said in an email that while the post will remain vacant for the remainder of the year, Council wanted to streamline their efforts by not having two elections at two different times in 2015.

"Since we do not have a history of problems with a quorum, they made the choice to hold the special and general on the same schedule (November 3rd)," said Brown.
A retired postal worker, McFarland had been on the council since 1987. Prior to his election to the council, he served five years on the city's planning and zoning board.
