New Wal-Mart food markets in Gainesville set to open later this month

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - They may look like they are ready to open now but it will be another few weeks, at least, before the two new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in Gainesville open.

A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart said Friday "both of the Gainesville West (Browns Bridge) and the Gainesville North (Thompson Bridge) Walmart Neighborhood Markets are slated to open in late January."

The one on the north side of town is being constructed on the site of the old Lanier Plaza Shopping Center just north of the Thompson Bridge Road/Enota Drive intersection. The one on the westside will be a part of the Lanier Commons Shopping Center at Browns Bridge and McEver roads and will occupy space that once housed a Food Lion and several other establishments.

Plans for the two new food markets were announced last July.
