BUFORD - A suspect is in custody following a tense SWAT standoff in Gwinnett County Friday evening.

According to Police Cpl. Jake Smith, Public Information Officer for the county, the incident began at 4:15 p.m. when a neighbor reported hearing shots fired inside a residence on Gold Mine Drive, near Simmons Mine Circle.

Shortly after responding officers arrived on scene, the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Jon Christopher Digiulio, began firing at their position. Smith said at this point Gwinnett County's SWAT personnel were activated and called to the scene.

Upon their arrival, Digiulio began firing upon members of the SWAT team, one of whom returned fire in the form of a single shot. Smith said the suspect was struck and injured by this solitary round.

Digiulio, who is wheelchair-bound, was removed from the home and transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to Smith. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

Smith said the officer who fired the round at Digulio will placed on administrative leave, per standard operating procedure, while the Deadly Force Investigation Team investigates the incident.
