Hall BOE begins work on budget, millage rate likely to be lower

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - Even though the budget plan for the 2014-15 school year is far from a done deal, it appears taxpayers may get a break in the coming year.

Hall County School System Superintendent Will Schofield confirmed that budget writers have proposed a reduction in millage rate to 18.9; the current rate is 19.25. [Note: A mill is 1/1000 of a dollar. Property taxes are computed by multiplying the taxable value of the property by the number of mills levied.]

In addition, the budget would include increased compensation for all employees, using a combination of increased days and raises. Every employee would see an increase between 2.5 and 6-percent higher in the next school year, according to Schofield.

The final budget will not be approved until June.

The Hall County School Board met Monday night at Chestatee High School.
