Baseball: Elephants get opening win at National Invitational tourney

By staff reports
CARY, N.C. -- Gainesville opened the National High School Invitational tournament with a bang on Wednesday, taking a 6-3 win over the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Venice (Fla.), in Cary N.C.

Michael Gettys tossed a complete-game, six-hitter, while also striking out six to earn the win on the mound for the Red Elephants (9-2). Gettys also allowed just two earned runs.

Sims Griffith had two hits for the Elephants, the only Gainesville batter to notch more than one hit in the game.

"I don't think a lot of people had us picked to win this game," Red Elephants coach Jeremy Kemp said. "This is a big win for us, and it's nice to start off with a win."

Gainesville will play Clovis (Calif.) at 3:15 p.m. Thursday in its second tournament contest.
