Piedmont's Vallejo named USA South Rookie of the Week

In just the second week of his young career, Justin Vallejo earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors after recording his first double-double of his career against Sewanee. Vallejo was up against N.C. Wesleyan's Adrian Moore for the award. The freshman from Daytona Beach, Florida has proved to be a dominating presence at the net as the forward leads the Lions with 22 rebounds this season.<br />

Ten of those rebounds came against the Tigers in his first career double-double as he notched 12 points to go with his 10 rebounds, as well as adding two assists in the win. The Lions came from behind to beat Sewanee on the Tigers' home court on Tuesday in a 79-62 victory.<br />

Vallejo has continued to improved statistically in rebounds with each game notching five in his first outing, seven against Toccoa Falls and 10 his last time on the court. The freshman was also an impressive 6-of-10 on field goals against the Tigers, giving him one of the best percentages on the team.<br />

The freshman received the conference honor for the first time in his career and scored an early birthday present as the freshman turns 19 on December 8. The Atlantic High School graduate is no stranger to success as he holds the school record for blocks in a game (12) as well as rebounds in a game (20).<br />

The win Tuesday against Sewanee put the Lions at 2-1 this season heading in to a huge contest for the home opener this Tuesday night. The Lions play host to No. 9 Emory Tuesday inside Cave Arena with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. The Eagles enter off a victory against Maryville Sunday and are currently 4-0 this season.
