GAINESVILLE - A graveside service will be held Tuesday for a prominent Gainesville attorney who died Thursday.<br />

Joe Sartain, 81, was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1957 and began his career as a claims adjuster and his law career on October 3, 1959 with C.D. Stewart. His cousin, Jack Carey, joined them in October 1960. After leaving that firm, Sartain started his own firm with his sons, Perry, Phillip and then Larry, accumulating more than 45 years of active trial practice in personal injury and Workers' Compensation law, according to the firm's Website.<br />

Sartain acted as a past chairman of the Workers' Compensation Section of the State Bar of Georgia, and he chaired and served on numerous continuing legal education (CLE) seminars for the bar. He served on Workers Compensation Study Committees for Governors Carter, Busbee, Harris, Miller and Barnes, serving as Chairman for two years. Sartain was presented with the State Bar of Georgia Workers' Compensation Distinguished Service Award on October 7, 2004.<br />

He was was a past president of the Northeastern Bar Association, American Legion Post 7 past Post Commander (1966-1967), and he was on the local Salvation Army Advisory Board for eight years, serving as Chairman for two years; a member and former chairman of the Worker's Compensation Section of the State Bar of Georgia; a member of the State Bar of Georgia, Gainesville-Northeastern Bar Association; and he had held a position on the Board of Directors of United Community Bank in Dahlonega since 1998. Sartain was the author of "Memories from the Cotton Patch to the Court House," which was published 2003.<br />

The graveside service will be at 11:00 Tuesday at the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Danielsville.<br />
