CLEVELAND - A former northeast Georgia educator and former state Schools Superintendent, Jack Nix, who was born in Cleveland, has died.<br />

Nix, 93, died Friday in Savannah. <br />
<br />
He began his career in education as an agriculture teacher in Habersham and Banks counties and served as Banks County Schools Superintendent, state Supervisor of Teacher Certification and state Director of Vocational Education before becoming Georgia Schools Superintendent in 1966, a post he held until he retired in 1977.<br />
<br />
During his educational career as Vocational Supervisor and state Schools Superintendent, according to his obituary, Nix established the statewide kindergarten program, improved teachers pay, and under his leadership, 18 vocational schools across were built across the state. <br />
<br />
The Jack P. Nix Primary School in Cleveland is named after him.<br />
<br />
The funeral will be Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Cleveland at 11:00. <br />
