CLERMONT - The Clermont Town Council has approved a ward system for voting on council members.

City Clerk Sandra Helton confirmed Friday that the council has agreed on a map outlining the wards, changes in the town charter and sending the matter to the state Legislature for approval.
Under the current set-up, which has been in place for years, candidates for the town council run citywide but do not have to live in a specific area. However, under the new plan, they will have to live in a specific part of town but will still be elected citywide. The mayor and one other council member, though, will can live anywhere while being voted on citywide.
The changes have been in the works for several months and will take place in January 2018.
