Gainesville City Council gives initial approval to high-end development

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council members gave unanimous approval Tuesday evening to first-reading rezoning and annexation proposals for a large high-end development to be built off Dawsonville Highway on Ahaluna Drive.

Residents who already live in the area hired an attorney to represent their interests, saying they were not opposed to the development itself, but they were concerned about the density of the development and the additional traffic it would bring.

Jim Walters, the attorney for developer West Ahaluna LLC, said the developer reduced the number of planned homes from 219 to 199 as a concession to current homeowners in the area. Attorney Clyde Morris, representing the residents, said while that change was appreciated, it wouldn't solve projected traffic and safety issues.

A second reading on the proposal is scheduled before City Council in two weeks.

This story will be updated.
