There are only two weeks left in the 2014 regular season -- and yet there is plenty left to play for, even now.

Region titles, playoff spots and pride are all on the line tonight in yet another big week of regular season action.

Every region features at least one intriguing showdown -- whether it is 7-AAAAAA, 6-AAAAAA, 8-AAAAA, 8-AAAA, 8-AAA, 7-AAA, 8-AA or 8-A. And yet only one of those regions features a game where the winner takes home a title.

The Region 8-AAAAA showdown between Winder-Barrow and Lanier sets up very nicely indeed: A win for the Longhorns yields their first region crown, while a win for the Bulldoggs secures their first playoff berth since 2003.

Other teams can clinch region crowns on Friday, but it would take multiple results to obtain a title -- and there are plenty of contests with postseason implications. For instance, Mill Creek will travel to Norcross in Region 7-AAAAAA in a game between two playoff hopefuls that still have region championship capabilities.

Meanwhile, Region 8-AAAA includes a big contest between North Oconee and Stephens County, as the Indians look to keep their region record spotless before a season-ending showdown with Buford.

Region 8-AAA contains a key battle between Jefferson and Oconee County, as the Dragons look to stay undefeated against a Warriors team that has been one of the stories in the entire state. Jefferson faces a season-ending showdown at Hart County next week (also undefeated).

Region 7-AAA features a number of playoff-tinged contests. West Hall will travel to Banks County looking to increase its lead at the top of the standings -- a win over the Leopards and a Dawson County victory at Lumpkin County could clinch a region crown. Yet the Indians will be looking to set up a winner-take-all battle with the Spartans next week when they play host to the Tigers. East Hall and Fannin County will also look to stay in the thick of the postseason hunt when they tangle in Blue Ridge.

Union County will look to bounce back from its first defeat -- after a week off -- when the Panthers travel to battle Riverside Military in Region 8-AA.

And, Commerce will also look to keep pace in a current three-way tie for first in Region 8-A when it takes on George Walton.
But Lumpkin County is fighting for a region title this year and has had two weeks to ruminate over a tough loss to Banks County and Dawson County is still fighting injuries. ... Lumpkin still has a chance to win the region but will need some help. The Indians need to win out and need Banks County to knock off West Hall Friday, which would set up a one-game showdown with the Spartans next week for the title. A West Hall win over Banks County, however, would seal the region title for the Spartans. ... West Hall is the only team to clinch a playoff spot and Lumpkin County leads a pack of four teams within one game of each other for the three other spots with two games to play. .. The key matchup with be the Lumpkin offense vs. the Dawson defense. The Indians are averaging 36.2 ppg in region play while the Tigers are yielding 23 ppg on the season.
But the key may be the Fannin offense. The Rebels are 4-0 when scoring 30 or more points and 0-4 when scoring less than 30. The East Hall defense has had its share of problems this year yielding 28.7 ppg. The Rebels defense has not been much better allowing 27.1 ppg.

-- ELBERT COUNTY (5-3, 2-2 Region 8-AAA): Beat Morgan County 41-7 last week.
-- NOTABLE: Elbert County leads series 4-0. The Blue Devils won 54-3 last year. ... This has been a lopsided series with Elbert County outscoring the Eagles 161-19 in the four games. It may be more of the same as Elbert's offense is rolling again averaging 41.5 ppg in a two-game winning streak. The Eagles defense is yielding just under 40 ppg on the season. ... The Blue Devils are sitting fourth in the region standings but could still catch Oconee County for third. The two teams meet in the season finale next week.
-- NOTABLE: Flowery Branch leads series 4-0. The Falcons won 38-7 last year. ... Despite sitting tied for fifth place and two games behind for the fourth playoff position, the Falcons are still alive in the playoff race. They will need to win out and get some help. It will be tough with Gainesville to follow next week. Salem also has winless Cedar Shoals left but Winder-Barrow has Lanier and Heritage and the Falcons own the head to head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bulldoggs in the event of a tie. ... Flowery Branch has played much better of late putting together a two-game win streak. But, the Seminoles feature a high-powered spread attack that has given the Falcons trouble this season. ... The Elephants need one more win to clinch no worse than second place in the region. They still have a shot at the region title but would need to win out and have Lanier drop its final two games of the season. ... This has danger written all over it, however. Buford does not want a letdown with a potential one-game showdown with Stephens County next week for the region title on the line. Don't expect one. ... If the Hawks ever felt they had a chance to finally get that first elusive win over the Blue Devils, this could be the week. Mill Creek is playing as well as anyone on the state over the past three weeks outscoring the opposition 169-21 in that span. ... The Norcross offense has been a little Jekyll-and-Hyde this year. The Blue Devils have been shutout twice in two losses and scored 21 or less in three other games. On defense, the 35 points last week is the most they have allowed in a game this season. In five games they have yielded 10 points or less with two shutouts. ... Chestatee's only win in the series came in 2005, 17-10, at The Brickyard. ... Despite the lopsided nature of the series, it is one of the fiercest rivalries in north Georgia. A Dragons win would clinch no worse than second place. They finish the season with a titanic showdown with Hart County next week in Hartwell. Banks County does hold the tiebreaker over Lumpkin County and closes out the season next week against East Hall, which is also fighting for a playoff spot. ... The key will be if the Banks County offense can find a way to crack the Spartans defense. West Hall has allowed just 37 total points in region contests (9.2 ppg).
