GAINESVILLE - Hall County Sheriff's deputies are presently being trained to confront emergency response situations without actually being on the road.

The decision-based driver training program is presented by Local Government Risk Management Services. LGRMS is a service organization of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association. ACCG and RMA's Risk Management workers compensation and property/liability self-insurance funds are financially supporting the program.

The program works like this: After some classroom instruction, deputies go hands-on with training in a driving simulator. One student will observe the scenario while the other sits in a realistic driver's seat. There, the driver is put through a series of various scenarios from a list of 80 realistic emergency response situations.

Whenever a driver makes an incorrect decision, the driving simulator's instructor can back up the scenario in the program and replay it. This will allow the driver to catch the mistake(s) made in the decision making process, discuss techniques to successfully navigate the same situation in reality and put the newly learned techniques and suggestions into practice upon repeating the scenario.
