North Georgia women's soccer blasts Montevallo, 9-2

DAHLONEGA -- Sophomore Sophia Matonak posted six points, including two goals in No. 11 North Georgia's 9-2 victory over Montevallo (0-6-1, 0-4-1 Peach Belt) Wednesday evening. The Nighthawks advance to 10-1-0 on the year with a 4-0-0 mark in conference action.<br />

After firing 15 shots in the first 30 minutes without any result, UNG punched through in the 34th minute when sophomore Jacy Ramey headed a Matonak cross into the goal to give North Georgia the lead, 1-0.<br />
<br />
The Falcons found an equalizer in the 38th minute when Jade Pennock collected a corner from Charlotte Crisp to sneak past Mallory Sayre and tie the game at 1-1.<br />
<br />
UNG quickly regained the lead in the 50th when Matonak scored on a Ramey through-ball to put the Nighthawks back on top, 2-1.<br />
<br />
Following the intermission, the Nighthawks came out on fire scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the half. Senior Cicely Taliaferro scored 32 seconds in to the second period with an assist from Mollie Arrendale.<br />

Rachel VanHorn got in on the action in the 38th minute, blasting one through the top right corner on a Matonak assist. Matonak quickly followed with her second goal of the night on a Taliaferro assist to give a 5-1 lead.<br />
<br />
Montevallo wound find one last goal from Nicole Johnston after she collected a deflected save on Taylor Gonzales' hard shot.<br />

Senior Sydney Reeder scored an unassisted goal in the 66th, firing a free kick over the wall through the upper left corner, giving UNG a 6-2 advantage.<br />
<br />
The Nighthawks added three more goals in the last 20 minutes, including the first goal of the year for both Jessica Allen and Kassidy Freeman, as well as Jessi Vaverka's second goal of the season in the 89-th minute to give UNG the final 9-2 lead. Alex Bowen collected the assist on Allen's goal, while Dacey provided the ball on Vaverka's.<br />

North Georgia will travel to Americus, Georgia this weekend to take on Georgia Southwestern on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
