DEMOREST - Members of Piedmont College's freshman class are volunteering their time and talents to help the "Empty Bowls" charity, an international campaign to fight hunger.
At 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Piedmont College Swanson Center, students will be serving soup and bread in bowls crafted by students. The cost is $15, and attendees not only get to keep the hand-crafted bowls, they can also enjoy performances by Piedmont's a cappella group, "Cantabile," and the "Schticks and Giggles" student improve troupe.
Tickets can be purchased at the door, but space is limited. Advance tickets are available at www.piedmont.edu/events. For more information about the Empty Bowls international program, visit emptybowls.net. Proceeds from the event will go to The Lord's Help soup kitchen in Cornelia.
Students are not only creating bowls for the event, they are working on all aspects of the fundraiser. For instance, first-year nursing students will be distributing information on the effects of hunger and malnutrition on health and education. The service project is part of the Piedmont's "Intro to College" course that introduces students to college and the surrounding community. Art Department Chair Chris Kelly said, "It is an uplifting and fun way to get involved in our community, and we would love to see as many people as possible there!"
