GAINESVILLE - Right-of-way acquisition for a new bridge over Lake Lanier on Dawsonville Highway at the Hall-Forsyth county line should begin before next July.
The location and design for the project has been approved and state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Teri Pope says purchase of the right-of-way is scheduled "in FY 14, the current fiscal year, with an estimated cost of $510,000."
Pope added "there are seven parcels to be purchased (and) this work has not begun yet."
She says construction funds are "in FY 15 at an estimated cost of $13.5 million."
Plans call a new two-lane bridge over the Chestatee River portion of Lake Lanier.
According to the announcement that the design and location of the new bridge has been approved the current bridge "is considered structurally deficient." It goes on to say the replacement span will "consist of two 12-foot lanes with 8-foot shoulders."
The project drew mixed reviews at an information open house, hosted by GDOT in December 2011, with some people questioning the bridge width while others questioned building it at all. (See link below.)
