ATLANTA - New claims for unemployment insurance in Georgia declined by 34.4 percent last month.
The state Labor Department says there were 35,503 new applications for assistance during August compared to 54,106 a year ago.
Reductions were mostly in manufacturing, construction, trade, and administrative and support services, according to Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.
Metro Gainesville saw a reduction of 30.2 percent (676 vs. 969).
The number in metro Atlanta was down 25.9 percent and in Athens, 28.7 percent.
