Mill Creek nipped by Peachtree Ridge, 31-30

By staff
HOSCHTON -- Mill Creek battled back and forth for four quarters but could not find a way past Peachtree Ridge in a top 10 battle in Class AAAAAA, falling 31-30 in Hoschton.

The Hawks (3-1, 1-1 Region 7-AAAAAA) had a chance to tie the score with 1:39 remaining, but watched a potential game-tying point after touchdown kick fail.

Mill Creek out-gained Peachtree Ridge 478-330 but was doomed by mistakes, especially in the fourth quarter -- when a seven-yard punt gifted the Lions a short field that they used to take a 31-24 lead with 2:54 left to play.

The Hawks struck back on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Daniel David to DeVozea Felton but could not even the score and then watched Peachtree Ridge recover an onside kick and a fumble on their first snap following the kick.

Carter Governale rushed 14 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Hawks' ground game, while David also rushed for 81 yards and a score. The quarterback also completed 12 of 26 passes for 240 yards. Felton had two of the receptions for 80 yards, while Eric Ritland caught three passes for 74 yards.

Mill Creek will travel to face Norcross on Friday.
