Watson passes GHS past Apalachee

BETHLEHEM -- Deshaun Watson passed for 372 yards and four touchdowns to lead Class AAAAA fifth-ranked Gainesville to a 49-6 win over Apalachee in Region 8-AAAAA acttion Friday night.

Watson was 24-of-29 for the game and had three TD passes in the first half as the Elephants (3-1, 2-0 Region 8-AAAAA) built a 28-0 halftime lead. Jay Gaudlock had one touchdown catch and Rodney Lackey had two TD catches in the first half.

Gaudlock finished with nine catches for 149 yards and Lackey had seven receptions for 111 yards as Gainesville finished with 559 total yards of offense.

Apalachee (0-3, 0-1) got its only score in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-6 after a failed two-point conversion. But Gainesville responded with another touchdown 49 seconds later and then added a pair of scores in the fourth quarter to blow the game open.

Mike Byrd would give Gainesville a solid game on the ground with 108 yards rushing and one touchdown. Watson also would score one rushing touchdown.

The Gainesville defense held the Wildcats to just 123 total yards for the game.

The Red Elephants will be back on the road next week traveling to take on Heritage (3-1, 2-0) in an early battle for first place in the region.
