The IRS Hammers Small Business

Suppose you have a small business. You have been struggling to stay afloat in this Obama recession. You have hopes things are turning around. Then you get a letter from the Internal Revenue Service that says: "Notification of possible income underreporting." The letter starts by saying "Your gross receipts may be under reported." Also in the letter is a form you must fill out within 30 days to explain why the portion of your gross receipts from non-card payments APPEARS TO BE unusually low. If that doesn't scare the bejeebies out of you, the IRS letter goes on to say this possible discrepancy could lead to assessments and additional tax penalties and interest. Notice the IRS has found nothing wrong. So why did they send it? Are they trying to intimidate small business as they did the Tea Party folks? No matter their reason, I am convinced they have no clue what they have done to small business people out here in the real world. Now this small business person must back off from serving clients long enough to get with his CPA and figure out what the hell the IRS wants. No matter what the business person needs to be doing, this has to be done right now. It is costing management time. It will cost for the CPA to re-review the tax return. It is a business momentum killer. But then maybe the IRS does not know what it has done to the business. Even scarier, maybe the IRS DOES know, and doesn't care. This is Gordon Sawyer reminding you that any government which can give you all you want, can also take from you all you've got.<br />
