The end of the unusually cool spell of weather north Georgia has been experiencing the past few days appears in sight but the forecast calls for still more rain - as an usually cool, wet summer moves into its final weeks.
Various media outlets have reported that Atlanta has recorded the lowest high temperatures on record for August the past couple of days, with record lows as well. Atlanta's readings are similar to those across the rest of north Georgia.
In Gainesville, for instance, Friday's high was 66 and Saturday's was 65. The lows for each day were 60 and 61, respectively. Some unofficial readings in the 50s were reported in the Gainesville area Saturday morning - 57 in Oakwood, was one. The lows for both days at Lee Gilmer Memorial Aiport in Gainesville were two degrees shy of the all-time record for the dates. Through Saturday, there had been only three days this summer on which highs of 90 or more had occurred in Gainesville - June 12 (92), June 13 (90) and June 28 (91).
Meanwhile, another 1.56 inches of rain had fallen at the airport in Gainesville in the past week as of 9:00 Sunday morning, bringing the monthly total to 4.58 and the total since June 30 to 20.96 inches.

As for the rest of this summer, as AccessNorthGa.com reported earlier this year, more of the same is expected before temperatures and rainfall return to near normal as summer ends and fall begins. For the next seven days, according to AccuWeather.com, the Gainesville area can expect high temperatures to gradually warm to around 90 by the weekend but there is a chance of rain each day - with showers more likely at the beginning of the week.
