GAINESVILLE- Carl Lawson, a longtime business and civic leader in Gainesville, has died.

Lawson, who was 95, died Thursday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

He was in the insurance and real estate business and still maintained an office at 311 Green Street, just around the corner from the landmark pyramid-shaped building at Academy and Oak streets that housed his office for many years.

He was a former member of the Gainesville Jaycees, an organizer of Hall County Community Chest (now United Way), former President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, former President of the Georgia Association of Independent Insurance Agents, and a winner of the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award.

Lawson was also a former Chairman of Board of Stewards at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Washington Street, second President of the Chattahoochee Country Club, and an organizer of the Board of Directors of Home Federal Bank. In politics, his activities included serving as Hall County manager for Dwight Eisenhower's presidential campaign.

Five years ago Lawson was recognized with the Gainesville Jaycees' Lifetime Achievement award. He was the club's Young Man of the Year in 1951.

The funeral will be at 11:00 Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Washington Street.
