CLEVELAND - Following another marathon work session/called meeting Monday, the White County Board of Commissioners approved a new budget for FY 2014, which begins next month.
During the meeting, the commissioners made some additional cuts from the original proposed general fund budget. The board unanimously agreed to an overall $20.3-million budget.
After the meeting, Commission Chairman Travis Turner said the budget accomplishes two things.
"We just passed a budget that does not increase the millage rate and, No. 2, we do not have to enact any type roll-up," Turner said.
This makes the fifth straight year that the county property owners have not seen a millage rate increase or rollup rate.
Turner said with declining property values, commissioners' jobs are becoming more and more challenging when they have to deal with the budget.
"Our hope and prayer is that we see the economy improve and increase, because I'm really getting tired having to cut, cut, cut - which we need to, government has gotten too big - but I would like for us to breathe a little bit."
Each of the commissioners thanked the county department heads for helping to keep the county expenses as low as possible.
The approved budget does include the reinstatement of retirement funding that went away for county employees a few years ago.
