ATLANTA - State education officials say students in Georgia's elementary and middle schools improved on most of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, or CRCT's, taken this year.
The state Department of Education released statewide results of the 2013 standardized tests on Tuesday.
Agency officials say the results show a one-year improvement in the percentage of students meeting and exceeding standards on 18 of the 30 content-area tests, no change on seven tests and decreases on five tests.
Also, students saw increases in the "exceeds performance'' rating on 24 of the 30 content areas.
Gainesville City Schools contributed to the improvements. "Over the past three years, we've seen our percentages of students meeting and exceeding, trending up in all of our content areas," said Director of Curriculum and Instruction Jamey Moore. "In reading we've gone up four percent, in language arts we've gone up six percent., math we've gone up three percent, science we've gone up eight percent and in social studies we've gone up 14 percent."
"We're still looking at our scores as compared with the state and know that there is some areas we want to continue to gain in, but it's great to watch to scores go up," said Moore. "We're very thankful for the work that the teachers have done and the leaders have done in the system to continue these trends."
The Hall County School System has also contributed to the raising of the ranks. Assistant Superintendent Eloise Barron said the system met or exceeded 25 out of the 30 categories.
"If you look at pass rates, Hall County Middle Schools out performed the state in 10 of 15 categories," said Dr. Barron, "those scores were within 6/10th of a point in each of the remaining five, so in the five other areas we were very close to the state average."
Barron also said the math program in Hall schools had shot far above average. "The sixth and seventh grade math pass rates are well above the state average by about 4 points in both sixth and seventh grade."
State School Superintendent John Barge said in a statement that the results show consistent progress by Georgia students.
State officials say school-level CRCT results will be available no later than July 10.
