ATLANTA - Gainesville native Katie Deal, daughter of Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and first lady Sandra Deal, has been nominated for a Georgia country music award.
The 2013 Georgia Country Awards honors the best in country music in the state. The awards banquet will be held November 9 at The 120 Tavern & Music Hall in Marietta.
Deal is one of 32 contenders for Female Artist of the Year.
In addition, Wild Wing Cafe in Gainesville has been nominated in the Small Venue category and there are several other nominees from northeast Georgia in the various categories, including Steve Bryson, Gina Gailey and Kurt Thomas.
According to her Facebook page, Deal graduated from North Hall High School in 1997 and studied after that at the University of Georgia, North Georgia College & State University (now the University of North Georgia), and Piedmont College, where she graduated in 2002.
Deal is probably best known for her portrayal of the late country music legend Patsy Cline in national tours in 2006 and 2011 titled "A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline."
Wild Wing Cafe is located at 311 Jesse Jewell Parkway and, according to its website, features live music every Friday and Saturday night. There are 29 other nominees in the Small Venue category.
Voting began last Saturday. There will be three rounds of voting, each lasting about six weeks. During the first two weeks of the first round, new acts can be added to the ballot.
