New concert series coming to Gainesville

GAINESVILLE - A new concert series this summer will bring six of the South's best known and most prolific songwriters to an intimate setting in Brenau University's Theatre on the Square in downtown Gainesville.

The Summer Songwriter Series kicks off Saturday, June 8, in the intimate 300-seat auditorium at Brenau's Downtown Center (formerly the Georgia Mountains Center), with John Ford Coley and Alex Harvey. The series continues Saturday, July 13, with Tony Arata and Fred Knobloch, and wraps up Saturday, Aug. 3, with Randall Bramblett and Greg Barnhill. All concerts begin at 7:00 and run for two hours, with regional singer/songwriters opening.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door or in advance at the John Jarrard Foundation website www.johnjarrardfoundation.com. The series is jointly sponsored by Brenau University and the Gainesville-based John Jarrard Foundation.

"The Summer Songwriter Series is an extension of the John Jarrard Foundation's major concert in September, and I'm excited about it because it's one of the first events we've had in Brenau's new downtown space," said songwriter Bruce Burch, executive in residence at Brenau University's College of Business & Mass Communication and founder of the John Jarrard Foundation. "The theater is intimate and you get some great sound from it. I think events like this are going to change the face of downtown Gainesville."

Burch says the goal is to continue the series into other seasons or expand into other concert series throughout the year. The new Summer Songwriter Series gives music fans a chance to explore the thoughts and stories behind the music, told by legends in the industry.
