OAKWOOD - In an annual event featuring music and fireworks, this year's Starlight Concert will host thousands of alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University of North Georgia (UNG).
Held at the G.W. Bailey Ampitheatre on the Gainesville campus, the Starlight Concert is the signature event of UNG's Gainesville campus and has become a popular attraction for associates of the university, community members, and their families.
"This is an event the entire community looks forward to. People spread out across several acres, kids run around and play, families gather with their picnic dinners and you can feel the excitement in the air," said Chris Stenander, president of the Gainesville State College Alumni Association. "We have an outstanding band scheduled that will play hits from the '60's through the current decade. Our fireworks company works hard to provide a dazzling display that rivals any in north Georgia. Considering our new status as the University of North Georgia, I expect this year's event to be bigger than ever."
Proceeds from the event will benefit UNG student scholarships. The entry fee is $10 per car or $20 per large van or bus. There will be food available for purchase as well. The event will be held June 7; in case of rain, the event will be moved to June 14.
"The Starlight Concert is a great event for family, friends, alumni and employees of the University of North Georgia," alumnus James Wright said. "In addition to being family friendly, there is something for everyone to do at the Starlight Concert, from the music, to the food, and ultimately, the fireworks. I highly recommend taking advantage of this great event, whether you live in the Gainesville area or the surrounding communities."
Gates will open for cars to enter the campus at 4:30 p.m., and will stay open until 8:30 p.m. The concert's music will be performed from 6 p.m. until dusk, and will be provided by the band "Bullet Proof." A fireworks display will kick off after the music (around 9 p.m.). Presenting sponsors are Danley Sound Labs and dB Audio & Video.
Walk-ins, pets, sparklers, political signage, advertisements (without sponsorship), open flames, and grills are not allowed at this event. The campus is tobacco free.
