GAINESVILLE - The aroma of barbecue dominated the air around Brenau Uniersity Saturday morning and into the afternoon as the competition began in the 5h Annual Brenau Barbecue Championship.
Thirty-seven teams from four states were expected for the daylong event, which benefits Brenau scholarships each year.
For $5, anyone could walk the campus, soaking up the atmosphere (and the smoke from the cookers) and sample the works of the entrants. At times, people were lined up several deep at some of stations where samples were being offered. Spend a extra few bucks and you could have a plate of barbecue from one of two vendors that were offering plates for sale.
As the clock moved toward noon, Brenau spokesman David Morrison noted the beautiful weather and recalled that rain has never been a problem in the five years of the event.
"It's been hot," he said, and there may have rain in the area but it has never impacted the fundraiser.
Music, a car show, a kids' play area and vendors featuring arts and crafts, etc. were also a part of the festivities which were taking place in some of the streets around Brenau as well as on the campus itself.
A lot was at stake for the competing teams. (See earlier story. Link below.)
