Hall cities beat state population growth rate

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
WASHINGTON - The population of the six cities and towns in Hall County beat the growth rate in the state over the past 12 months, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Bureau reports that its population estimate for Georgia shows an increase of just one percent between July 1 2012 and July 2 2013. The cities and towns in Hall County - led by Flowery Branch - recorded an average increase of 1.5 percent.

The report estimates that the population of Flowery Branch grew by 2.68 percent in the 12-month period (from 5,855 to 6,012). Next was Gainesville, 1.36 percent (34,318 to 34,786), followed by Clermont, 1.35 percent (886 to 898); Gillsville, 1.25 percent (239 to 242); Oakwood, 1.18 percent (4,042 to 4,090); and, Lula, 1.07 percent (2,798 to 2,828).

Of the largest cities and towns in the nine counties adjoining Hall (including only the northern portion of Gwinnett), six showed population increases, while five showed decreases. Most of the decreases ere minimal and so were a couple of the increases, according to the report. Meanwhile, the Census Bureau says Alpharetta is among the fast-growing cities in the country. (See separate story. Second link below.)
