JEFFERSON - Jackson EMC says about 5,000 of its customers were affected at the height of the early morning storms that pushed through north Georgia Sunday.
"Between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. today (Sunday) a line of strong thunderstorms moved through Jackson EMC's service territory, causing outages related to downed trees and lightning," spokeswoman Bonnie Jones said. "At the height of the storm, 5,000 customers were affected, although many of those were power 'blinks' caused by lightning. Outages were mainly in Gwinnett and Hall counties."
By 9:00 Sunday morning, Jones said there were "a little over 600 customers without power, with 530 of those in Gwinnett County."
Jones said most of them were scattered outages.
"The most serious damage was in north Gwinnett County at Hamilton Mill Road near I-985, where a tree has broken five-to-six power poles." This is in an area bounded by Bart Johnson Road and North Bogan Road.
"Most of the customers affected have had their power restored, however, 26 customers will be without power for several hours while the broken poles are replaced," Jones said shortly before 9:00 Sunday morning.
Jackson EMC customers may report power outages from their mobile phones at http://mobile.jacksonemc.com or by calling their local Jackson EMC office.
