UNDATED - New boating laws go into effect today, just in time for summer.
"Last year we had some significant accidents on Lake Lanier," said Captain Mike England for the Department of Natural Resources. "That brought along more public outcry of lowering the BAC to .10 to .08 and bringing it in line with driving under the influence."
Children under 13 are also now required to wear life vests, raising the age from 10.
Finally, future boaters must complete a boating education class before hitting the lake.
"Any person born after January 1, 1998 will be required to have passed a boat education course before they can operate any vessel," said England. "That will go into effect July 1, 2014."
State officials have been touring the state, hoping to bring awareness to the new laws. Governor Deal and other officials will be at Laurel Park in Hall County at 2 p.m. Wednesday to wrap up the state tour.
