Baseball: Second round series' staggered starts begin today

By staff
North Hall will begin its second round state baseball series today against old region foe Franklin County, while Gainesville learned on Tuesday that it will take on Creekview in its second round doubleheader on Thursday.

The two series are part of a big week for area programs, as Stephens County faces Northwest Whitfield in Class AAAA; Jefferson will also play host to Wesleyan, beginning at 4:30 p.m. today in Class AA, while Rabun County travels to Westminster at 4 p.m. Union County, meanwhile, is still waiting to find out who it will take on in the second round.

The Panthers defeated Bowdon in Game 3 of their first round series on Tuesday and await the winner of Greater Atlanta Christian and Pepperell -- which split their doubleheader last Friday but have pushed Game 3 to today.

The Red Elephants' Class AAAAA showdown was also pushed back a day due to Creekview's first round defeat of Lakeside, Dekalb stretching until Tuesday -- thanks to the rain that enveloped the state over a five-day period.

Region 8-AAAAA champ Gainesville (25-3) swept Hiram in round one and will begin its second round, best-of-three battle with the Region 7-AAAAA runner-up Grizzlies (18-11) at 4 p.m. Thursday at Ivey-Watson field -- which will be broadcast live on 1240 AM.

In Class AAAA, Stephens County (18-5) will travel to Northwest Whitfield (23-6), beginning on Thursday. The Indians swept past Alexander in the first round, while Whitfield defeated Grady in three games, concluding the series Tuesday.

North Hall (26-2) slammed Decatur in the first round and will hope to keep marching against Franklin County (15-13), as the two teams open doubleheader action at 4 p.m. today at Jody Davis Field in Gainesville.

The Lions are the runner-up from Region 8-AAA and have come on strong in the second half of the season after winning just three of their first 11 games. Franklin County swept Sonoraville in the first round, 10-0, 7-5.

The Region 7-AAA champion Trojans, meanwhile, are on a 15-game win streak and are coming off a 10-0, 6-2 mauling in the first round.

In Class AA, Jefferson (25-2) has been just as dominant, winning 16 straight contests, including a 10-3, 13-1 destruction of Heard County in the first round. The 8-AA champion Dragons face a Wesleyan team that allowed no runs against Coosa in the first round (7-0, 3-0) and is 18-9.

Fellow Region 8-AA opponent Rabun County swept Jordan 5-3, 7-0 on the road in the first round. The Wildcats (17-7) travel to Atlanta to take on 6-AA champions Westminster (20-8).
